Some people believe that to learn the way other cultures live it is better to watch films or video programs. Other believe that it is better to read books and newspapers.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with these statements.
Introduction
There are indeed several ways to learn about a culture. This has driven some to perceive that it is more transparent to educate through the audio-visual media as films and videos; while another group supports learning by the printed versions. If questioned to a large extent I favor the former view than the latter. My opinion is justified further.
Body 1
The most convincing I would put forth is that films and video programs are easy to interpret and covers a large amount of details. This is, when one watches films, he can gather several aspects of a culture, such as how people of a particular culture look, their skin color, customs, dressing styles, family types, food, music, language, architecture and also their attitude to life. All these make it quite easy to understand and remember for long.
Body 2
In addition to the audio-video impact, it is also apparent that many a times, reading may hamper in forming a clear word picture. Vocabularies, print, style of writing and the message, for instance, may be misjudged or misinterpreted by the readers. On the contrary films with its music, dialogues, costumes, gestures, movements and expressions give a clear message to its audience. This is against the boredom of a book.
Body 3
However, I shall not overlooked the benefits of learning a culture through words. Those who are word-friendly find a great pleasure in exploring cultures by reading, as the printed material can be understood at one's own pace and also can be read often and again if needed. The details through books are sometimes less fictitious than projected in films.
Conclusion
To close the discussion, I would comment that it is essential for all to know culture other than their own in any possible ways. However, I am inclined to support that films are more ideal and appropriate than books. It must be admitted that films and videos have a huge mass appeal and also caters to all classes of society.
